Lead Environment Artist – BioWare (based in Montreal)

BioWare (www.bioware.com), the newest member of the incredible family of EA studios, has created some of the world's best-selling titles including the award-winning Baldur's Gate, the Neverwinter Nights series, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Original BioWare-created IPs include Jade Empire, the critically acclaimed Mass Effect and Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood for the Nintendo DS. BioWare is hard at work on the epic fantasy RPG Dragon Age; and Star Wars: The Old Republic, our massively multiplayer online game being developed at BioWare Austin.

BioWare’s games have continually achieved critical and commercial success. All of our published titles are in the top 5% highest rated at www.gamerankings.com; in fact we have 6 games in the top 1% highest rated games of all time! Today BioWare has close to 500 staff at its two locations and continues to grow.

This role is vital to the function of the environment team, providing superior artistic work and technical know-how, contributing their knowledge and skills to the betterment of the project. The successful applicant must:

- have at least 5+ years experience in full cycle environment building, texture creation with next-gen consoles;
- show an exceptional understanding of color theory, and ability to create balanced & appealing color palettes;
- understand the aesthetics of environment, function vs. form relationships, as well as what makes a game level fun and intriguing;
- be a superior communicator;
- work well in a team spanning artists, programmers, and designers;

Architectural and drafting experience is an asset, as is previous game industry experience and level design.

Duties/Responsibilities:


- Provide mentorship, and assist with the development of skills within the environment team.
- Create models of 3D environments, map predefined textures, and create new textures.
- Closely follow art and design concepts.
- Adhere to the defined technical limitations and constraints when building your level.
- Test and troubleshoot areas that are not working in the game engine and proactively fix them.
- Be creative and anticipate needs toward your level’s design.
- Participate in critiquing your work and the work of others.
- Communicate deadlines and difficulties to your art director.
- Communicate and work with the designers and programmers to make the level playable and enjoyable.
- Be meticulous and organized in the approach to the tasks, files and storage of the material.
- Be enthusiastic and ready to take on challenges.
- Maintain pacing in situations of intense schedules.
- Performs other duties as required.

Portfolio Requirements
All portfolios must contain a detailed shot breakdown of the work. It must be very clear what you, the applicant, are responsible for in your reel, screenshots, scanned pictures, web page portfolio, etc.

Please submit a portfolio, including some (or all) of the following.
3D portfolio
- Modeling, texturing, and lighting applied to exterior architecture.
- Modeling, texturing, and lighting applied to interior architecture and design.
- Natural / organic environments.

Plusses:
- Examples of the above in a low poly format.
- Modeling, texturing, applied to scene prop objects.
- Modeling, texturing, applied to the human figure, animals, or character designs.
- Unwrapped textures applied to buildings, characters, and organics.
- Effects animation both natural and fantastical.
- Various animations applied to ambient objects and characters.

2D portfolio (no originals please)
- Architectural rendering.
- Color work and examples of tonal coordination.
- Environmental design both interior and exterior.
- Figure drawing.

Plusses:
- Conceptual drawings applied to architecture, natural environments, props, etc.
- Technical drawing.
